Annabel Giles, celebrity and dog lover interview

I have admired Annabel Giles since I saw her (forgive me Annabel) several years ago not getting Gotcha’d by Noel Edmonds as she spotted the joke immediately.  Sadly didn’t get to meet her until recently, but she is every bit as charming, funny and determined as I hoped she’d be.  The owner of Godfrey, a Pug who delights everyone in Brighton, she has had to make some adaptions to her fashion instincts to accommodate him, read on….. Should the Kennel Club ban breeders convicted of cruelty

There have been many cases over the years of breeders with a high profile and successful showing career convicted of cruelty.  Yet there never seems to be action by the people taking their money for many years, the Kennel Club.  Surely automatic bans for those convicted or who sign over animals to avoid prosecution should be the norm?  Continue reading →

Reporting puppy farmers and bad breeders, some advice

As someone who uses a lot of forums, I see many enquiries from people who have discovered a puppy farm or back yard breeder and want to act.  Sadly immoral and illegal are different things, but there are a few things worth trying to stop this horrible, greedy, selfish behaviour.

Bad breeding and puppy farming results in puppies suffering unnecessarily from hereditary illness and poor temperaments, yet there are more of them now than ever.  If you find one, please act. Continue reading →

Choosing a dog for your kids, best breeds

The right choice of breed for your family pet depends on many factors.  The basic one is your own level of experience, time available for exercise and size of home.  Some breeds are challenging for adults, not just kids so you have to be honest about your own ability to train  and be firm but fair with a dog.  Don’t forget, teaching your kids boundaries and respect is part of the deal.  Badly behaved, rude, disrespectful kids shouldn’t have any pet.  If they have no respect for you, they won’t have any for a pet and will get hurt.

Pet and child safety, prepare your dog or cat for kids

Dogs that bite children tend to fall into two categories: one is the status dog, owned by an idiot macho man who has encouraged the aggression, the other is the fearful dog, scared of this smelly, screaming, clumsy alien.  I want to talk about the second type, the first needs locking up and the dogs confiscated.

The arrival of a child of any age is as big an upheaval for your pets as for you.  Routine, noise, priorities, attention, new items and dynamics are all important and potentially threatening for your dog or cat.  Simple preparation could cut down all of these issues, yet few actually do it.

Puppies, Lies and Farmers – expose the buyers press release

Puppies, Lies and Farming – expose the buyers please

After 20 years of campaigns and petitions, puppy farming – a practice where dogs are bred in dirty, overcrowded conditions often producing sick and aggressive puppies – is still a growing trade says Debbie Connolly of SafePets UK.

Despite the new Animal Welfare Act, these dog breeding farms continue to appear from nowhere every day. Puppy farms often need planning permission for sheds and warehouses to be used for breeding – Carmarthenshire County Council is currently considering a planning application from a local puppy farmer to use an agricultural shed as a dog breeding kennels for 196 dogs.  The application is retrospective which means that thousands of puppies have already been bred and sold from the premises.    Continue reading →

Feeding a raw diet to dogs, BARF diet, natural feeding advice

A lot of people feed what used to be known as “BARF” diet (bones and raw food) and there are many cases documented of behaviour improvements after this type of feeding.  This is possibly due to the removal of any artificial additives, preservatives and colours, known to cause problems in some dogs.
